More times than not, many people seem to chunk Pilates and Yoga into the same category. Although there are some similarities, the differences amongst the two are major and therefore, permit further explanation.

While the breath is incredibly important in both forms, technique between the two is very different. Yoga is a very spiritual based practice and uses a more holistic approach, while Pilates focuses on a specific area called "The Power House." The origins are also very different being that yoga was created in South Asia and Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in Europe, originally was developed as a rehabilitation and strengthening method.

Ultimately, the main goal of Pilates is spinal alignment and strengthening the core. Typically, the movements are small, isolated and repeated in sets. Yoga is diverse in its practice and usually with each pose it’s complimented with a counter pose to work the opposite muscle group.

Still unsure of which is the right practice for you? Try both! Sign up for a class at CK Pilates today and feel the benefits of Pilates in action!
